Video Premiere: Le Big Zero – ‘How Very’

Le Big Zero

I know how to use a semicolon; do you?

Formed in 2019, Brooklyn’s Le Big Zero are a throwback to the days when punk, alternative, post-punk, and indie rock bands experimented with unusual time signatures and angular dynamics and dissonant melodies, creating bands with such disparate yet linked styles as Dismemberment Plan, Jawbox, and Sonic Youth.

While preserving that spirit of a bygone era, Le Big Zero still charge ahead into the future, creating a new angular sound for the modern music landscape. Powered by the dual vocal stylings of songwriter/guitarist Michael Pasuit and singer Carolina Aguilar, the band have been merging pop sensibilities with a punk spirit with amazing results. Their upcoming EP, How to Use a Semicolon—which is due out February 21 on Mint 400 Records—promises to present songs in unique shapes and styles that will still capture your attention and never let go.

Today, we’re debuting the video for the lead single off the album, “How Very,” a unique soundscape of deeply angular rhythms and haunting yet jagged melodies that find the perfect balance between dissonance and pop. With a video that combines fantasies of cabaret performance with a general expression of ennui, it becomes the perfect compliment to a song that’s full of as many contradictions as the video.

“’How Very’ packs a lot of moods into just three and half minutes,” explains songwriter-guitarist Michael Pasuit. “There’s grooves and chaos. It’s both wistful and a bit snarky. But it’s sure of itself—not confused. Have we lost you yet?”
