Video Premiere: Lowheaven – ‘Chemical Pattern’

As terrible as the COVID pandemic was, there are positives that came from it. No, I’m not talking about America’s obsession with Tiger King, but specifically all the music that was created by people who suddenly had a lot of free time on their hands. One of those music projects that flourished with the sudden free time brought about by the pandemic was Toronto band lowheaven who developed a unique sound that contains elements of post-hardcore, screamo, blackened noise, and metal. “We’re not a happy listen,” admits vocalist Dan Thomson, “Lowheaven is something that has got a lot of weight.”

The band’s debut album, Ritual Decay, is coming down the pipeline, and today the band are debuting the video for the single “Chemical Pattern” off the upcoming album. A barrage of barely contained chaos, the song explodes in a destructive cacophony that leaves you stunned like a punch to the face. With its quick cuts and zooms, the video perfectly captures the quick-fire intensity of the song, marking a perfect marriage of video and audio.

“This song has kind of taken on a weight of its own when you see what’s been going on all around us since the beginning of this year,” explains Thomson. “Which is kind of wild since the song was written three years ago. This song was definitely a personal response to the fact that everything around me was melting; there wasn’t a semblance of comfort or familiarity. While a significant amount of Ritual Decay is intensely personal, ‘Chemical Pattern’ is a look outwards. Let’s be honest, everything is fucked. And I don’t have the way out. Uncertainty is terrifying.”

“‘Chemical Pattern’ embodies the term structured chaos which in itself is what lowheaven communicates,” adds vocalist and bassist Mike Buchta. “It’s the most punk lowheaven gets. ‘Chemical Pattern’ is a driving force with the drums behind the wheel.”
