Matt Hunter and the Dusty Fates were born just before pandemic, conceived as a new solo project of sorts for Matt Hunter, founding member of long-running indie rock outfit New Radiant Storm King. Hunter has additionally played in the past with J. Mascis & the Fog, Silver Jews, King Missile, the Wharton Tiers Ensemble, and SAVAK, and also is in The Whimbrels.
“The idea for the Dusty Fates is that it would be an unstable, constantly changing cast of people with me as the sole full-time member,” explains Hunter about his new project. “I love the idea that a band’s dynamic can constantly be in flux based on whoever’s around, who wants to play at a given time, and who might be best for a particular song.
“It means that your songs can be completely different every time they’re performed, and you have to be ready for that. I find that thrilling.”
Today, Matt Hunter and the Dusty Fates are debuting their new video for their single “Story of a Supergroup” off their upcoming album Reindeer Soul out June 7 on Dromedary Records. “‘Story of a Supergroup’ was partially inspired by The Mountain Goats’ ‘The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out of Denton,’” Hunter says of the new single, “but is really more about all the other indie rock bands of our time and generation. The difference between what inspired us, what we hoped for, and where it’s taken us. There was always the element of the divine, and no matter what it was worth it. I hope all of my past and current compatriots agree.”
That Mountain Goats influence can be seen and felt on the track’s delicate earnestness and talent for storytelling. The video is tinged in a sense of nostalgia as images and memories flash through footage of the band playing. Check out the gorgeous video below.
