Wouldn’t you rather get high than go to work? Femme-forward Brooklyn punk band MONTE certainly would, and they’re not afraid to admit it.
MONTE started in 2017 as the solo project of singer and guitarist Caitlin Montclare before expanding to a trio with the addition of drummer and audio engineer, Ismael Baiz, and bassist Meghan Rose. They’ve released two EPs and a slew of singles and played over 50 live shows in their short time as a band, including such well-known New York venues as “The Knitting Factory” and “The Bowery Electric.”
Today, they’re unveiling the video for their latest song “Canna-Vision,” a slamming punk tune, influenced by ’80s and ’90s pop-punk, about the disappointing experience of re-entering the workplace following the pandemic when you’d rather spend the day smoking weed. “Why come into work, when we are undervalued in the workplace?” asks Montclare in explaining the impetus behind the song. “We might as well sit home, smoke weed, and be blissfully unaware of the crumbling world we live in. We should be neck deep in our art, not our work. Wouldn’t that be something?”
“Although it might be a cynical outlook, many of us felt like a doormat at our workplace, overworked and underpaid,” say the band. Still, they resist classification as being a weed-based band. “We’re not a ‘stoner band,’ but we do like to indulge ourselves,” they explain. “Some people drink, take pills, do hard drugs; we just like to light up and play music.”
The video is an all-out weed fest featuring the band having a debaucherous time in the workplace, complete with a costumed dance party. If you’re sick of punching the clock day-in and day-out, you’ll fall in love with this stoned punk anthem. Check out the video below.
