Atlanta-based noise-rock purveyors NAW are not here for your outdated societal expectations of beauty. Meeting a grungy guitar sound with noisy, hardcore vocals, NAW are creating a unique sound that’s beautiful and harsh at the same time.
Today, the band are debuting the video for their song “Ugly” which originally appeared on their split with fellow noise rock act Asbestos Worker last November. Contrasting clean and unclean vocals, the song is perfect for those who love to hear their noise balanced against melody. The visceral music video combines live footage with disturbing imagery of people pulling rotting flesh off of their faces, which perfectly encapsulates the beautiful-yet-disturbing nature of the song itself.
“The song ‘Ugly’ was written to express dismay at societal expectations of beauty and conventionality,” explains NAW’s A. Sherman. “The lyrics characterize a desire to shed these expectations even at the expense of being viewed as ugly, strange, or even frightening. We thought it would be fun to have the music video complement the lyrics literally with the use of props and makeup. We wanted to convey the sort of edginess and grossness the song required without being overly serious about it.”
