Ohvaur frontman Timothy Den has lived a number of lives and been through a remarkable series of transformations. He spent his childhood growing up across Taiwan, South America, and Miami. He spent 15 years in the United States as an undocumented immigrant, which was detailed in Ohvaur’s 2013 album A Memories Chase.
He’s been the assistant editor at Lollipop Magazine, founded the website Transform Online, fronted the band Kimone, opened for the likes of Spoon and The Album Leaf, and scored short films including Bitch which premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Ohvaur’s upcoming album Intertwined confronts themes of cycles of beginnings and endings, reflecting on losses and rebirths amongst the band members.
Today, Ohvaur is debuting the video for “Every Minute Here” off the upcoming album. A slowly building simmer of a track with a driving alt-rock style and a deep sense of moodiness, this track and the accompanying video keep up a rock pace while exploring the emotional resonance of post-punk.
“Mike (drummer) considers this song the ‘turning point’ of the album-making process,” explains Den. “We had already self-recorded, produced, and mixed the four quiet songs on the album before we realized that we were not up to par to tackle the upbeat, punchy ones by ourselves. They needed a true pro to reach their full potential. When Bill (Gould, Faith No More bassist/songwriter) brought us to Matt (Wallace, producer), this was the first song he mixed … and we were blown away. We couldn’t believe how ‘big’ it sounded, not to mention that we were now working with the man who helmed Angel Dust! His treatment of the synth layers in particular really gave the song its character.
“The words were written toward the beginning of COVID, when, for a second, it seemed possible that anyone could roll the wrong hand. It was also just after a period of witnessing several deaths around me, the combination of which served as a wake-up call to truly embrace every minute we have with our loved ones.”
