Video Premiere: Perestroika – ‘Midnight Twilight’

Montreal’s Perestroika were founded by Shravan Deolalikar in 2017 and combines synth-pop and post-punk into a swirling mix that transports you to the glory days of the 1980s and the height of the new wave scene. Rounding out the lineup are Mickey Dagger, former member of the Omegas, and Gustavo Rodriguez. Backed by an Oberheim DMX drum machine, they’re able to bring mesmerizing electronic rhythms to their synth-pop stylings, making their two EPs—2019’s self-titled record and 2021’s Monolith—a synth-pop extravaganza.

Today they’re debuting the video for their latest single “Midnight Twilight.” Channeling the ’80s-era Steve Miller Band and krautrock heroes Kraftwerk, “Midnight Twilight” is synth-pop at its absolute finest with its hypnotic dance beats, dueling synths, and echoing vocals. The video is cheesy in all of the best ways, utilizing slick special effects to create a dizzying 1980s visual landscape.

“‘Midnight Twilight’ is truly a nocturnal riddle wrapped in visuals,” says Shravan, reflecting on the track. “The video? It’s like catching glimpses of a shadow’s dream, all while the universe winks from the darkness.” Check out the video below.
