Video Premiere: Pimmer – ‘Distant Dam’

Pimmer

Boston-based indie-rock band Pimmer released their debut LP, Halcyon 303, on Mint 400 Records back in July, their collection of songs recorded with Grammy Award-winning engineer Ducky Powell who, sadly, died in 2023. Pulling from influences as disparate as Bob Dylan, Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü, and The Killers, Pimmer put together a unique and intoxicating indie cocktail on this record.

Today, they’re debuting the video for the single “Distant Dam” off the new album. “The video for ‘Distant Dam’ was shot in both Quincy and Boston, MA, this past August,” explains Pimmer’s Sanford Schaffer. “Because it was mid-summer, filming would begin at 5 a.m. to capture images under a more forgiving sky and gentler sunlight.  The main visual concept was both an attempt to mimic imagery and themes from the lyrics—constant travel—as well as to capture some classic landmarks of Boston.

“The song was the first single off the LP, ‘Halcyon 303’, and it represents the PIMMER’s first-ever video. Shooting and directing it was a family affair, as my kids, Blake and Zoe Nelson, actually shot all the footage and contributed their own cinematic ideas over the course of three days. The head of our label, Mint400 Records, was generous and skilled enough to handle any editing and post-production.  Overall, it came out well and definitely has its moments; however, I can imagine the next video having a bit more action.  The future is free …”

Wistfully melodic while being delicate and raw at the same time, “Distant Dam” is a deceptively subtle rock tune with a strong emotional resonance. And, on a personal note, as someone who used to live in Boston, the video’s love letter to Beantown mixed with the nostalgic tone of the song makes me a bit homesick.
