Video Premiere: Regan Ashton – ‘Resume’

Regan Ashton is a Chicago-based singer-songwriter originally hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah. For 13 years, Ashton was a founding member and bassist for the SLC-based melodic punk band Problem Daughter which he was in for 13 years. Now he’s working on his own solo project, with his new album Infinite Pest, due out March 31 from Burro Borracho Records.

“Most of the songs on this record are  three to 13 years old,” explains Ashton. “They have always meant a lot to me and have been on every set I’ve played since. However, during the last couple of years, I found I have been relating to them less and less. This album is a bit of a goodbye to certain parts of my past and ends on an optimistic note, which is new. While I still struggle with a lot of what has happened in the last 16 years, my life has changed completely and those moments no longer define me.

“Later, old pain. Peace the fuck out.”

Today, Ashton is debuting the single “Resume,” a powerful folk punk track based in piano and acoustic guitar. Ashton’s vocals range from a passionate whisper to a trembling shout, with a punk rock, nasal quality that gives a sense that, for all the strong emotions, there’s a touch of tongue-in-cheek quality to the song. At one point a swaying sing-a-long and, at other times, more of a Violent Femmes-style acoustic punk free-for-all, the song marries eclectic styles seamlessly. The single comes with a lyric video you can check out below.
