Video Premiere: Sulynn Hago – ‘Driving Off a Cliff, 1967’

Sulynn Hago

Punk fans might recognize the name Sulynn Hago from the time when, in 2015, they were selected from a field of over 400 applicants to become the new touring guitarist for Canadian thrash punk heroes Propagandhi. But there’s a lot more to Hago’s career than that. The Brooklyn-based guitarist, producer, and songwriter has been playing guitar for over two decades and can play a variety of styles ranging from punk to classical to jazz guitar.

Today, Hago is debuting the video for their new single “Driving Off a Cliff, 1967,” the second single off an upcoming LP slotted for release this fall. The song is a smokey blues-rock track that’s a slow, smoldering tune with a lot of chaotic energy bubbling beneath the surface. The video features a toy car, some stock footage, and some choice shots of Hago dancing on a roof, placing them in an almost noir backdrop against images of an industrial city. The whole thing is a masterclass in subtle emotional content that will leave a distinct lasting impression.

“In Driving Off a Cliff, 1967 the initial vision was to defy very overdriven riffs and create a heavy song with a completely clean guitar tone,” explains Hago about the track. “I also wanted to blend jazz-style layering with the ease and accessibility of pop music.”

“As for the subject matter, I tend to lean toward dark content to create songs that represent everyday people and real human experiences,” they continue. “And there’s nothing more human than darkness. We might as well dance to it.”
