I Crawled Into The Hole is a nostalgic exploration of Sunbleached’s sounds since their first release. It features singles “White Lace,” “Hell is Repetition,” and “No Cure For Life.” “Beware of the Dog” is the final single to be unveiled from the EP and the foundations are heavier-leaning. The track thematically is designed to be a middle finger to the man, drawing from the vocalist, Josh Baker’s experience at a previous workplace. Being based on feelings of being undervalued, overworked and taken advantage of, the song is angry, grungy and frustrated.
New Noise caught up with vocalist Josh Baker, who ran us through each track on their new EP in an exclusive track-by-track.
No Cure For Life
“No Cure For Life” was originally intended to coincide with the release of our previous EP Delicate Places We Hide as an amalgamation of the sound we explored on that EP. It just wasn’t ready in time for us to release it with DPWH. It’s a reminder to be present in times of panic and learn to breathe through it. It also serves as a bit of a self reflection exercise for me.
White Lace
“White Lace” is about my experience getting married earlier this year. Marriage is not something that was ever really on our radar; we were always sort of against that and traditions in general. But there came a time where my wife started to indicate that she might like that, and my stance has always been, I wouldn’t want to hold her back from experiences in life that she wants, so we decided together to cave into tradition and get married!
Beware Of The Dog
“Beware Of The Dog” is a heavier, drivier sort of song than what we usually do. In short, it’s a middle finger to the man, written about the feelings I associated with my previous place of employment before I moved on. I felt undervalued, overworked, and taken advantage of, which I think is something a lot of people can relate to in some area of their life. It comes from a place of frustration and perceived complacency felt by the persons in the position of power.
It Makes Me Sick
“It Makes Me Sick,” in a broad sense, is about me coming to terms with people having expectations of me that I don’t necessarily feel like I can live up to. I wrote this about being involved in the music industry and feeling undeserving of the opportunities that are extended to us.
Hell Is Repetition
This one is about romanticizing being depressed or having a negative mindset in general. “Hell Is Repetition” was originally about doom-scrolling, but there came a point while I was writing the lyrics where it occurred to me that I was actually describing an attitude some people (myself included at times) can have about being in a negative mental state. The lyrics “how long will I stay here slow dancing with my demons” questions how long I’ll keep on repeating that process instead of trying to do better.
