One of our favorite Bay Area punk bands, Tess & The Details, are making their triumphant return. Following the breakout success of their 2023 debut album Runaway, the band are planning a sophomore album later in 2026. But while you’re waiting for that, the band are kicking off the new year with their latest taste of new music as they debut the video for their new single “Standing On the Edge,” the second single on their independent imprint Casino Martini Records.
Demonstrating Tess & The Details’ talent for marrying melodic punk with smart and introspective lyrics, “Standing on the Edge” is only enhanced by the Wes Anderson-esque music video that was directed by frontwoman Tess Stevens and which features Oakland-based punk rock locations including 924 Gilman and the Kona Club.
“When trying to capture this song on screen I kept going back to contradictions … what is happening on the outside vs. what is happening on the inside,” explains Stevens. “You hear the intensity of the lyrics and the idea of putting on a mask to function. We referenced Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut for the album cover. For the music video, Wes Anderson’s way of showing ‘sad characters in pastel places’ shows up in this video and helps ‘Standing on the Edge’ share its vulnerability. In every location, no matter how bright and fun … There is an overarching feeling of contradiction. I’m really proud of how our cinematic obsession as a band has translated in our videos. It’s just another way to express the details of The Details.”
“Every time we work on a video, emphasize the on-set experience as much as the final result,” adds drummer and Details co-founder Gideon Berger. “For us, that means having fun during the shoot. It’s not just work. It’s mostly play, We hope that comes through on camera. Our approach is usually: Have fun, be goofy, and act as naturally as possible. It just so happens there’s a camera in the room capturing it. That felt especially true for this video. We finally had an excuse to mosh in a record store, jump in the water and drown each other, or just hang out at a bar, have drinks, and cheat at pool.”
