The Answer Lies in the Black Void are the partnership between vocalist Martina Horváth of avant-garde metal outfit Thy Catafalque and composer/multi-instrumentalist Jason Köhnen of Celestial Season, Bong-Ra, and The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. Dubbing their style of metal “transcendental metal,” they seek to explore the emotional and existential limits of the doom metal genre, blending it with elements of folk, ambient, and electronica. Their first two albums, 2021’s Forlorn and 2023’s Thou Shalt, both on Burning World Records, were compelling, critically praised work that helped them build a name for themselves. Now the band’s third full-length, Transcendental, is due out on Friday on Lay Bare Recordings.
Today, The Answer Lies in the Black Void are debuting the video for their single “Deconstructed.” Much like the title suggests, the song is deconstructed doom metal with long, ethereal passages and ambient mood music, creating a subtle yet powerful testament to the capabilities of the metal genre. The mysterious and abstract video adds to the awe and wonder of the track, making for a profound artistic statement.
“What we give our time and attention to reflects what we value most,” say the band about the track. “Each moment we offer is a quiet declaration of meaning.”
