Video Premiere: Unreal – ‘Skin Crawlers’

Unreal

Portland, Oregon’s own synth punk dynamos Unreal are about to creep up on you with their creepy crawly new video. Made up of the self-described “three pieces of scum,” the band also claim to have been “summoned into being by the cries of earthworms crawling through the dirt” and “formed in the bowels of an unarmed man writhing in pain from Portland, Oregon.” If you’re grossed out already, just wait until you get to the music video.

Unreal’s debut self-titled album comes out tomorrow (and we’ll have more on that including an interview with the band) and have already released two singles, “Dead Eyes” and “Dirty Blue.” Today, they’re debuting the video for the song “Skin Crawler” which is off the new album but is not being released as a single ahead of the record, meaning that the only way to get to check out this track and video is right. here.

With a punk rhythm supporting a very ’80s new-wave style synth, the song embodies everything that is fun and exciting about synth punk. Using synthesizers adds a certain beauty to the melody that can get lost in traditional guitar-based punk, and this song utilizes that perfectly. The gross-out video sees the band members munching down on worms like their own low-budget remake of How to Eat Fried Worms with less cooking. I seriously hope this video was made with gummy worms. If you get easily grossed out by this sort of thing, watch the video below with caution, but trust me when I say that it’s a lot of fun, too.

Unreal is out tomorrow, and you can presave or preorder it here. Follow Unreal on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for future updates. And stay tuned for our review of the album and interview with the band tomorrow!
