“Punk rock stoner rapper” sounds more like a Mad Lib than an actual descriptor of a musical artist, but for Bay Area solo artist Vincent Reese, the combination works surprisingly well, as his laid-back rap style blends with punk rock’s in-your-face intensity. It’s a contrast that somehow mashes up together into a perfect mixture. Combine that with vibrant and creative music videos and powerful live performances, and you’ve got an artist to keep an eye on. On October 19, Reese is putting out his new record Mean Streak on Dirt Cult Records, further demonstrating what the combination of punk and rap can produce.
Today, Vincent Reese is debuting his video for his latest single “Chip On Your Shoulder” off the upcoming album. With distorted vocals reminiscent of Check Your Head-era, noisy, buzzing guitars, and a discordant saxophone, this track is everything abrasive about punk rock while, at the same time, being a toe-tapping, catchy tune. The bizarre, horror-themed video compliments the raw power of the track to create a visceral experience. The end of the video gives a surreal mock newscast to further the delightful randomness of this video.
“‘Chip On Your Shoulder’ is about people in your life who never stop whining,” Reese explains. “They always got something to complain about as if everything starts and ends with dissatisfaction. They always give a shit, even when it’s not their turn to give a shit. The video follows an energy vampire / dealer sucking the life out of the city dwellers of San Francisco.”
