Video Spotlight: East Capri – ‘Not What They Want’

East Capri

Since the release of their debut 2021 EP Wake n Repeat, Brisbane, Australia’s alt-rockers East Capri have been on the rise, but also expanding their sound.

“We’re a band that doesn’t want our listeners to get too comfortable with our sound,” explains vocalist Eden Cartwright. “We love to push the boundaries of the genres we find ourselves writing and incorporating new flavours and sounds into it.” They’ve really been making a name for themselves, sharing stages with big-name local acts like Stepson, Headwreck, Days Like These, Revoid, Bad Neighbour.”

Today, we’re spotlighting their new video for their single “Not What They Want.” With echoes of metalcore and an emo sense of yearning, the song is a highly emotional catharsis and an anthem of empowerment.

“Originally, we wrote this song and entered it into a worldwide songwriting competition (URM Academy)—which we proudly won!” the band says about the single. “The concept was inspired by a work friend who was dealing with the judgmental opinions of certain people in his life. He was made to feel shame and regret because he chose his own path. We wanted this song to share that outside pressures don’t matter; your success and journey is your own. We are all running our own race and shouldn’t compare ourselves to anyone else.”

The video contrasts a grey reality devoid of joy and emotion with a more intense and colorful reality, contrasting the emotional contrast of the song. Check out the video by Andrew Vaughan below.
