On the third album from indie-pop comedy artist Henry Hall, he wants you to Stop Doing Funny Stuff, although he seems to refuse to take his own advice. With a razor-sharp wit and a wicked sense of irony that meshes perfectly with his innate talent for pop hooks.
His first single off the album, “Like a Knife,” has already been making waves, and today we’re spotlighting the second single off Stop Doing Funny Stuff called “Wikipeia-ing Poison Snakes,” a song about going down internet rabbit holes. The kooky music video sees Hall reaching the heights of obsession as he doomscrolls through Wikipedia, something all of us have probably done at one point or another.
“The song kinda speaks for itself with its lyrics and wild production,” explains Hall, “so I wanted to make sure to make a video that was pretty straightforward—essentially just footage of me performing the song on a bunch of instruments and me stressing out while trying to distract myself by going on Wikipedia. Our DP Liz Charky is so immensely talented, and she helped me realize all of that with her camerawork and keep the takes interesting cinematically. Our producer Jack Price was invaluable too in helping us bring all the details of shoot the together last minute because I thought of the video concept literally 10 days ago (laughs).”
As for what he hopes people will take from the song, he says, “That they’re not alone when they’re doomscrolling! I’m doing it too and it’s okay. I think that’s an important element of songwriting—You don’t have to prescribe a solution to every problem, but as long as you’re shedding light on some kind of universally shared tough emotion, you can hopefully help people feel less alone in that negative feeling.”
