Purple Knight celebrates 50 Years as a Punk Rock Band

Purple Knight is arguably the oldest punk rock band in Canada. DIY legend, drummer and punk rock innovator Mark Gaudet started the band in his grandmother’s kitchen with best friend Raynald Leger. Celebrating 50 years in 2024, Purple Knight is playing Xerox Bar in Moncton, New Brunswick in Eastern Canada on July 6, 2024. Purple Knight paved the way for many local, regional and national bands to network, connect and find a place to sleep in towns all over the Maritime provinces. Fuelled by the history of 60s and 70s hard rock, Mark Gaudet’s endless drive, hard hitting rhythm and all ages, safe spaces approach to getting your band out there, has kept this band playing and making music for half a century.

A pioneer of the sound and the DIY aesthetic, Mark worked at Sam The Record Man, now Franks Music since 1980, educating young and old about the history of all music, leading to the formation of a local scene.

“Mark introduced me to everything from DOA to SNFU and everything in between,” Jody Kelly said. “He encouraged me to start my own band and learn to play.”

A huge influence on all bands from the area, Mark is credited for the rise of East Coast bands like The Monoxides, Hope, Sloan and The Degenerates, to name a few.
