We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Rainstorm Brother’s music video for their song “Drivin'” (watch it below). The track is taken from the band’s forthcoming EP Pt. 1, which is scheduled to be released on November 12, 2018.
Rainstorm Brother’s John Isaac Waters commented:
“The idea was to use the car as a body. It’s easy to see the plastic exterior of our friends, and assume that everything is fine. It’s much harder to be friends with someone when we are honest with our struggles and our weaknesses, but true and lasting friendship usually requires an admittance of our own fragility. The mirrored-masked figures are beings that can see without their eyes, they look at what is on the inside, and keep asking the driver to strip away the shell – even if it requires shattering his old notions of his shape in the world – until he is finally able to also see as they do.”
Waters continued:
“These desert beings (are they aliens? Or monks? Both?) have covered their faces and wear mirrors to reflect the world back at itself, as a way of both asking a question and making a demand. As the video progresses, they repeatedly ask the driver to deconstruct the vehicle from which he views the world, until it breaks down and he can join them.”
The duo, made up of John Isaac Watters and Tyler Chester, are gearing up to release their debut EP Pt. 1, a six track collection that features contributions from Madison Cunningham (Verve Records, Live From Here with Chris Thile), guitarist/engineer Justin Stanley (Beck, Leonard Cohen) and drummer James Mcallister (The National, Sufjan Stevens). Previously, members of Rainstorm Brother have been featured at LA Weekly, The Deli Magazine, Buzzbands LA & more.
Rainstorm Brother’s Pt.1 is the perfect marriage of solo artist (and former architect) Watters’ pensive, spare acoustic numbers and producer/keyboardist Chester’s deep, dreamy soundscapes. Across the six songs, Watters’ work as a folk/country balladeer is juxtaposed to intoxicating effect with Chester’s synthesizers, layered strings, modular electronics, sequencers, 808s, live drums and electric guitar, casting his music in a lush and challenging new light.
New single “Drivin'” is a plaintive, atmospheric folk track that finds Watters grappling with the suicide of a close friend & calling attention to the realities of mental illness. With its tempo changes, acoustic jangle and an instantly memorable sing-along chorus, “Drivin'” becomes the vehicle by which Rainstorm Brother carries away sadness. The accompanying visual is a beautifully shot art film that features Watters driving through the desert, stripping away parts of his car as he explores the landscape & interacts with faceless apparitions in his search for answers.
