Ten albums in (still hard to believe) and Anti-Flag are still writing music as poignant and thought-provoking as ever. American Fall picks up directly where 2015’s American Spring left off, mixing inspiring lyrics over punk and ska-fueled riffs. Tracks like “American Attraction,” “The Criminals,” and “When the Wall Falls” are sure to become permanent staples in the band’s live sets, while cuts like “Digital Blackout,” “I Came. I Saw. I Believed,” “Casualty,” and “Finish What We Started” are just as worthy. “Racists” (the band’s response to the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, VA this past August) contains some of the album’s best lyrics, with the line “Just ‘cause you don’t know you’re racist, you don’t get a pass for your ignorance” coming at a time when society definitely needs it.
While the street punk purists out there may still be screaming “sell-outs” regarding Anti-Flag’s more recent successes outside of the underground, they’re truly missing out. Good music is good music, and there’s very little not to like here.
