The guitarist of Big Thief goes solo here and extends on his full band’s indie-folk template with an impressive display of poetic balladry that hones in more on his Texas roots. Often bordering on country, there’s plenty of roots rock and stunning guitar work, with some subtle hints at jazz, and while it’s mostly sparse, fuller moments of layering exist as plenty of friends are on hand. At at its core, though, Meek’s slightly twang and southern drawl vocals and his rich, soulful guitar work forms the base of these thoughtful, literate reflections.
