Portland wins again with this retro recording of sounds that points towards folk, blues, R&B, and pop all wrapped up in a unique version of indie-rock that entails ragtime and rich Americana .

Fronted by Benjamin Wuamett’s inimitable, passionate vocals (though plenty of other voices also sing), the musical is equally colorful, with plenty of piano and horn solos that are entirely soulful but in a playful, introspective way that’s both sophisticated and fun.

While countless other indie outfits are taking their cues from the ’80s, Ezra Bell are going further back in time with a much more cultural, diverse listen that would be a great companion to the first Blind Pilot album.
