Don’t be duped by the title of Jeen O’Brien’s second album. Modern Life is pure alt-pop, the sort that ruled the FM dial in the ’90s, and is only rarely done this well today. Jeen uses quiet versus loud dynamics, fuzzy guitar rock and an anthemic delivery that amazingly was recorded with lo-fi equipment in her attic, and though it’s certainly nothing ground breaking, the songs here are hard hitting, melodic, and emotive- all ingredients for the aggressive indie-rocker who remembers and misses Veruca Salt. If you’re keeping score, Jeen is now 2 for 2 when it comes to releasing must hear albums.
