Kings of metal, Malevolent Creation, return with a vengeance on new disc 13th Beast and the best part about it? It does not disappoint! The bar of excellence has been raised high, with this one. Nothing like a tasty slab of blood soaked, Floridian death metal to cleanse the palate, right?
The aptly titled 13th Beast is Malevolent Creation’s 13th studio record featuring founding member/guitarist Phil Fasciana with newcomers Lee Wollenschlaeger (Throne of Nails/Imperial Empire) on vox and growls, Josh Gibbs (Thrash or Die) on bass, and Phil Cancilla (Narcotic Wasteland) on drums.
Although the band’s lineup has changed over the years, Malevolent Creation’s ferocious and unrelenting sound has not waned a bit. From the first riff of “End The Torture” to the final echoes of “Release The Soul,” the intensity factor is off-the-charts crazy, and that may be an understatement. Just when you thought previous records like The Ten Commandments or Stillborn couldn’t be topped, 13th Beast sets a gold medal standard this genre needs.
It’s no secret I’ve been critical of many death metal vets making hit-and-miss or just poor records in the last few years, but Malevolent Creation is that rarity of a band that’s remained consistent from the beginning of their career to where they are now. 13th Beast may equal or even exceed the brutality of Joe Black which is arguably their angriest and most aggressive recording to date.
Would you like to know why I call Malevolent Creation the Slayer of death metal? With songs like “Knife At Hand” and “Canvas of Flesh,” Malevolent Creation prove beyond the shadow of a doubt how truly lethal and dangerous they are. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention track seven, “Decimated,” for which the band shot a video. The beast is hungry on this record, and devour it does.
I’d like to take a moment to point out that 2018 was a rough year for the band, losing former vocalist Bret Hoffmann to stage four colon cancer on July 7. The fact that MC released this record is a testament to both the band’s creative will and grit to get this disc done in the face of such adversity. Cheers to them for following through and doing this.
Malevolent Creation is a band that invents/improves upon the art of violence each record they make. Where many bands lose a step or two, maybe run out of creative energy altogether, Phil and crew perfect new methods to destroy eardrums and shred heads musically. 13thBeast is bludgeoning, destructive death metal the way it was meant to be played and heard. Make sure you add this to your collection ASAP.
