On their latest studio outing, goth metal masters Moonspell record for the first time in their native Portuguese language. A concept album of sorts, 1755 represents the year a massive earthquake wreaked havoc on the band’s home of Lisbon. Along the way, there’s plenty of over-the-top orchestra-driven moments, some more effective than others. Tracks that stick out include “1 De Novembro” and “In Tremor Dei,” but unless you speak and understand the language, the barrier does make it difficult to both comprehend, and fully embrace the record. Doubtful those with no prior knowledge of the band (or short attention spans) will give it a second chance.
