Founded by Adam Gontier (Three Days Grace) and Mike Mushok (Staind), Saint Asonia made their debut in 2015 with their self-titled effort. Now fully rounded, having added Cale Gontier (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Sal Giancarelli (drums), the supergroup have returned for their latest, Flawed Design, and it’s far from a sophomore slump.
Featuring several great collaborations—Keith Wallen (Breaking Benjamin) on “Beast,” Sully Erna (Godsmack) on “The Hunted,” Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation) on “Sirens,” and Dustin Bates (Starset) on “Ghost”—Flawed Design wastes no time in flexing its numerous strengths. The band did a great job in choosing their singles, but the record as a whole excels from start to finish.
Opening with “Blinded,” Flawed Design brings to mind the best rock anthems of yesteryear. From there, you have Adel’s guest vocals on “Sirens” adding just enough depth to propel it forward as a top track in the collection; “The Hunted” and its thunderous yet melodic chorus, “Beast” with its emotional strain, “Another Fight” and its echoing statement of overcoming struggle, and “Martyrs” with its reflective, calming closer.
Any fan of hard rock (whether they’ve listened in recently or not) should give Saint Asonia a spin. Flawed Design is like a blast from the past, showcasing masterful skills every step of the way.
