2018 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for music, and this sophomore album from Shook & Co. is a big part of the reason why. With influences like Hank Williams and Elliott Smith, Shook’s blunt, lonesome vocals soar through tales of heartbreak and hangovers that take cues from rugged alt-country, honky tonk, and pop infused Americana. The band make the best out of melodic hooks and warm pedal steel, and Shook’s unwillingness to pull any punches lyrically gives us the image of a punk spirit gone heart on your sleeve country. Not only is this one of the best albums in recent history, but “Good As Gold” is one of the best songs ever written.
