Shark Infested Daughters

We’re reaching peak shark-related references in modern metalcore (by my count, we have two), but Calgary’s Shark Infested Daughters might be the most snicker-inducing. Like the other shark-referencing group (Feed Her To The Sharks), this group offer a welcome throwback to previously charted metalcore waters. Shark Infested Daughters’ sound draws heavily from groups like As I Lay Dying and I Killed The Prom Queen, with a greater emphasis on haunting, Gothic-style choruses and a generous addition of only-partially-cheesy synth work. Everything has a much greater Gothenburg feel, and it’s clear the band is very familiar with Dark Tranquillity’s catalog, and that’s a great choice for a primary influence.
The album bursts out of the gates (partial pun intended) with three excellent tunes that highlight the band’s best attributes. Unlike most modern metalcore, Shark Infested Daughters are much more interested in melody than brutality, and the Gothenburg-style melodic work is quite well done (if a bit derivative). Interestingly, the breakdowns and chugs that pepper the album (though used less frequently than most) are rather uninspired and a real weakness for a band that otherwise know how to write a catchy tune. Shark Infested Daughters certainly lack the bombastic flair of Feed Her To The Sharks, and they aren’t as undeniably hooky as I Killed The Prom Queen, but, even at the album’s worst (which is basically the middle third, unfortunately), the Canadian group are never below competent and entertaining. The album’s highlights (the first three tracks and the last two proper tracks) are honest to God excellent throwback metalcore bangers, but a middling middle of the record (as well as a sense that Feed Her To The Sharks do this thing better) drags the end result down just a peg.
