American Standards have, for over a decade dealt a consistently frank and unfussy brand of hardcore. Moving into 2023, the band, now signed to Manic Kat Records, have compered a new trilogy of tracks. “The Dealer,” “The Tourist,” and “The Vagrant” all form the quick new collection Dopamine Dealer.
The EP explores everyday themes, such as consumerism, overcoming self-doubt, and tackling the shortcomings that make us human, with “The Dealer” projecting a blistering combo of gang vocals, crashing drums, and explosive riffs.
Showing more nods to their punk influences is “The Vagrant.” Despite packing a punch of skull-crushing proportions, there’s a catharsis in its delivery, and the band’s cohesion, built up since the release of 2012 debut Still Life steers the chaotic ship with confidence.
The Tourist is an angry and visceral hammer blow, with frontman Brandon Kellum’s glass shattering vocals the perfect conduit to the theme of the song, which challenges those who chase superficial goals and prizes.
Despite its brevity, Dopamine Dealer feels like American Standards’ most angry and disillusioned set of songs to date. The intensity is channelled into sharp songmanship and pertinent subject matter and marks a steady start to the year for the Arizona outfit.
