Album Review: Asaf Avidan – “Gold Shadow”

Asaf Avidan
Gold Shadow
(Telmavar)

Previously of folk-rockers Asaf Avidan & The Mojos, Avidan solo has proven to be just as crucial as his full band who became the biggest indie-stars in their home country of Israel. Despite his birthplace, Avidan and his music sound quite Western, and his inimitable voice alone is worth investigating further. While is pipes warble and waver in pitch, almost resembling a gender neutral Bob Dylan with some wild moments, his music is equally unique, ranging from blues and folk ballads to melodic pop undertones. Sometimes intimate, other times coarse and giant, Avidan sounds like he could be the offspring of Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin.
