The Blue Poets
Self-Titled
(Self-Release)
The Blue Poets are based in Hamburg, Germany and have been busy putting together eleven songs, including a cover of “Sunshine Of Your Love,” to show off the talent they have with the tracks being recorded live and mixed on analog tape at the renowned Toolhouse Studio: “No tricks, no corrections, and no computers.” The sound is blues based rock with a ‘60s edge that seems to work quite well for this quartet consisting of Gordon Grey (vocals), Marcus Deml (guitar, songwriter, producer), Phil Steen (bass), and Felix Dehmel (drums). Guitarist Marcus Deml, is also known for his band Errorhead and is the winner of American Guitar Player Magazine’s Guitar Hero award.
The sound is straight up classic rock, with a vibe of the ‘70s when music still had power and energy, no disco or wimp rock here at all….thankfully. The band gets right into the groove as soon as you hit play and never looks back, as they hit the ground running and even do the cover of “Sunshine Of Your Love” proud with a tight and kickass performance that retains the power of the original, but they add their own little twist with the slower and quieter parts that they add. The guitar playing is ace, just top notch and shows why Deml won that guitar award. Slick guitar playing, sweet riffs and add in the smooth vocals and the tight back beat and bass makes for a thrilling listen. You can hear the band having fun and that gives the listener an added bonus, knowing that if you see them in concert, the band will sound like they do on here, no added sounds on here or studio tricks, just a band that throws down and lays down a groove that is impossible to ignore.
This is the kind of music that was all over the place forty years ago, and got taken for granted back then, but now is a breath of fresh air and makes you want to hear more from them. This is what makes my job a pleasure, finding bands like this to make me smile and dance around my house to.
