Standing out on a label with many esteemed names is no easy chore, but Houston’s Buxton succeed by mashing up folk, country, psyche-rock and indie influences into a meticulous and intimate display of skill and eclecticism. Front man Sergio Trevino is an adept story teller, and the band’s ability to blaze through rock songs with distortion as well as calmer, Americana acoustic moments is on par with their household name label mates. Comparisons don’t do this album justice, but My Morning Jacket, and Demolition (Ryan Adams) both come to mind, with a dense atmospheric and twang-filled angle. (Tom Haugen)
