The second album from sibling duo Champs bridges nostalgic folk music with today’s version of indie-pop in a way that leaves a large mark despite its often minimalistic approach. The brothers know their way around lush harmonies and are capable of acoustic songs that mirror the beauty of Rocky Votolato, while in other areas ’80s electronica and even subtle hip-hop influences are evident. But where the pair shine is the sparse balladry and soft guitar plucking tunes, making Vamala further proof that music doesn’t have to be groundbreaking to be extraordinary. (Tom Haugen)
