The album Changeling from Season of Mist—and the project of the same name from metal grinder Tom Geldschläger, aka Tom Fountainhead— is seriously mesmerizing. The music throughout the album feels like the intensions are to send us to unchartered territory. Geldschläger pushes the envelope with ritualistic and psychedelic movements, with blasts of serious metal.
“Falling in Circles” is an insatiably fierce and perplexing rush of sound. The guitar is aggressive and blends perfectly. “World? What World” is probably one of the darkest and most tormented tracks I’ve heard a long time. It’s a pure rush of sound that’ll pierce a hole straight into your chest. “Abyss” and “Anathema” are provocative pieces of music, the change in the music is eccentrically genius.
Let’s jump to “Changeling,” where the vocals are leading the charge in this musical battle. The gut-wrenching howls will leave you on your knees!
Geldschläger describes “Changeling” saying, “This song came from a few musical themes that I had written on the oud. From those few humble notes, it turned into quite the monster—a monster where I think everybody in the core-band shines equally. At that point in the album’s story, we’re beginning to take the frame-work of tech/prog death metal into uncharted territory, so it seemed appropriate to give this song a unique, winding structure where a shorter pumping mid-tempo banger is book-ended by intensely psychedelic blast-beat driven parts that are building towards a quasi-black metal frenzy at the end.”
The sound on the entire album is incomparable to anything. This is what we are missing in music today—a sound that has never been done before.
The core lineup on the album includes drummer Mike Heller (ex-Fear Factory, Malignancy, Raven), fretless bassist Arran McSporran (Vipassi, Virvum), and lead vocalist and lyricist Morean (Alkaloid, Dark Fortress). But in addition to them, Changeling also features dozens of guest performers, including guitar solos by Andy Laroque (ex-Death, King Diamond), Bill Hudson (Trans-siberian Orchestra, Doro, I am Morbid), and Jason Gobel (ex-Cynic, ex-Monstrosity), as well as numerous other vocalists and instrumentalists.
