Album Review: Dad Jokes – ‘Dad Max’ EP

Dad Jokes
Dad Max EP
(Self-Release)

Imagine the dudes of HBO’s Silicon Valley starting a band. Now imagine that band would actually be good. The result of four actually talented nerds starting a band is Dad Jokes, and their crowning achievement in music is Dad Max, and I’m already loving the puns here.

The music takes a front seat and shoves the vocals in the trunk on the Dad Max EP, and the music is something to be marveled at. It’s mellifluous and almost sweet, a definite treat for anyone who likes their prog rock to be melodic and (dare I say) pretty. The standout of the album is, of course, “Beyond Punderdome,” and I’m not just saying that because the name makes me laugh. The other songs seem to recede into its shadow, even the lovely closer “I Will Turn This Car Around.” The album is too short, fading into oblivion far too soon. When you’re listening, it feels infinite, like it could and should go on indefinitely. Before you know it, the album is over and you’re changed, however slightly. You’re better for having heard the four songs, for having shared in the puns and the lightness of the EP.

This is a great EP, Dad Jokes is a great band. You should be extremely excited for whatever the future brings for this band, be it punny, pretty, or both.

Purchase Dad Max here.
