More than 30 years into the game, DFL (also known as Dead Fucking Last) is back again with a new full length album, Fuck It. Titled appropriately, this new release from punk rock veterans brings a carefree fire that must not be mistaken for nonchalance. This release is simple on the surface, hitting all the markers of a classic skate punk record, but deals its hand in an abundance of heart. It’s melodic, catchy, fast paced, and rough around the edges.
Threads of 80s and 90s punk pull through the entire record. The track “Paddy Wagon” is noteworthy, pairing rebellion with an amusing sense of cheek.
As the album carries on fast, loud and aggressive in short bursts of motion, the record closes in sooner than you’d realize. The penultimate track “Heavy Is The Head” sways with a strong downbeat, teeming with controlled chaos. “Tour Talk” ends the record with a high energy, gang vocals teaming up with dynamic riffs and driving bass lines sending the song into anthemic domain.
Overall, Fuck It has a lot to offer. The album’s release comes via SBÄM Records, whose tagline “no rules, just punk” rings especially true with this release, overflowing with DIY spirit and unapologetic attitude. Refreshing simplicity on this record reads as unpared honesty, the tried and true classic punk approach makes its mark on each track. DFL knows what they’re doing, and they do it with alarming integrity– no frills, no nonsense, and pure fun.
