Album Review: Drowners – ‘On Desire’

Drowners
On Desire
(Frenchkiss)

Drowners came out swinging just a couple years ago with a sound that embodied all things New York wrapped up in fuzzy melody and contagious indie-rock jangling. This follow up sounds like the band’s formative sound with a gym membership, where bold guitar work and charged choruses that takes the Marr and Morrissey influence to a stronger level, and touches on Echo And The Bunnymen or even The Cure influences in their own New Wave/post-punk version. While it lyrically surrounds the darker sides of love, the music here is equal parts alternative rock and indie-pop with both brooding tunes and anthemic rockers. Drowners certainly aren’t here to reinvent rock’n’roll, but they do a damn good job of rewriting the past.
