Album Review: Girls On Grass – Self-Titled

Girls On Grass
Self-Titled
(Self-Release)

Often sounding like they’re from further south and an earlier decade than their Brooklyn home, this first album from Girls On Grass is rife with twangy sounds and warm power-pop that is complemented by Barbara Endes’ easy going vocals and imaginative guitar work. While the ballad moments aren’t far off from country, the playful honky tonk sits right on the cusp of rock’n’roll in a way that is both simple and addictive. While similarities to Neil Young and the Velvet Underground are inevitable, if this unique brand of Americana is what the kids are calling ‘Cowpunk’, well, it just might be my new favorite subgenre.
