Album Review: Know/Suffer – The Great Dying

Know/Suffer are a death metal-infused hardcore band from El Paso, Texas, whose music is both brutal and introspective. Musically, the band are heavy, with double-bass drum action; thick, distorted guitars; and even the odd chord thrown in to keep the listeners on their toes. It’s quite the rush.

But, what separates this band from others playing in this particular sandbox are the lyrics of vocalist Toast William. Instead of going for tough-guy posturing, his lyrics turn inward, shooting out poetic verses which detail personal and political struggles. His vocal style is earnest and yearning, which eschews the typical vocal tropes in this kind of music for something a bit more human and real.

In addition, the band throw in the odd curveball when it comes to the music. Sure, this is plenty that is moshable, but they also throw little off-kilter flourishes of guitar, which add a bit of noise to the proceedings, giving them a unique flavor which you usually don’t always find in bands like this.

It all adds up to one hell of a killer EP. The Great Dying showcases Know/Suffer at their best. It will be interesting to see where they go from here. From a creative standpoint, the sky is the limit.

Don’t pass up on this one.
