Gritty, abrasive, and rowdy are words I would use to describe M.U.T.T.’s sound. The San Francisco punk rockers bring us an experience of raw, unhinged attitude. The relatively new band has sprinkled singles, EPs, and an album since 2022, gaining momentum for the release of their second album Toughest Street In Town out on June 20th via Quiet Panic. The second half of the new album is made up of the re-mastered Dirty Deeds EP that came out in February of 2024. With a fresh litter on side one, M.U.T.T. is eager to get barking this summer.
This album is more of what you might expect and hope of the band. Crunchy, distorted guitars and in your face attitude. The band has an unfiltered and unashamed honesty to them, like it or not, they couldn’t give a shit. This is the type of album that the louder you play it the better it is, how it is meant to be played. The songs also grow on the listener, with each listen there is a riff, beat, or lyric that sticks out well. The vocals feel like an angrier early hardcore that isn’t too shy to add some melodies and hooks here and there. The band shines instrumentally, punk rock n roll done well in 2025. “Runnin’ With the Devil” delivers a pulsing force that drives the listener off a bridge into chaos. The main riff is a toe tapper and a head bobber without a doubt. The title track opens with “The streets are talking and they don’t even know your name!”, quite the bold and badass statement much like the band themselves.
“SF Is Killing Me” slows it down a bit but doesn’t hold back any less. Regardless of the tempo, lyrics, or content of each song, the band doesn’t hold back in any aspect on this album.
M.U.T.T. also continues their aesthetic of gritty punk rock with visuals that align with their previous works. The grainy black and white cover features elements like handcuffs, smoking, ripping a chain link fence, a set of dog’s teeth, and likely a steep street of San Francisco, all setting the vibe M.U.T.T. gives. The band knows what they want to do, how they want it to look, and it shows.
