Prior to putting on a new MMJ album, I tend to think to myself ‘well, I wonder what this one will sound like’. Jim James and company have certainly kept their listeners guessing, and though they often linger around the moody, psyche-rock column, each of their 7 studio albums are entirely different on a variety of levels. This time it’s an extremely well produced affair where ’70s pop, prog-rock tendencies, and jam-band fun are manipulated with the help of falsetto pipes and strong, soaring riffs. While some of their most accessible songs to date can be found here, MMJ also keeps plenty of tunes rooted in early ’80s rock as well as atypical specks of country and folk that only they can get away with. Many people are citing this as the best MMJ album yet, and I’m inclined to agree with that. (Tom Haugen)
