Album Review: Pixies – ‘Head Carrier’

Pixies - Head Carrier

Pixies
Head Carrier

My introduction to the Pixies was from a cassette of Doolittle I came across that one of my older sisters’ boyfriends left lying around. The opening bass riff to “Debaser” had me instantly hooked. Still, they’ve always been a bit “hit or miss” for me though. Such is the case found here on their sixth effort. Tracks like “Classic Masher” and “Might As Well Be Gone” are easy to fall in love with, while others like “Oona” and “Um Chagga Lagga” are disposable at best. Newcomer Paz Lenchantin even lends her vocals to “All I Think About Now,” which bares a striking resemblance to their classic “Where is My Mind?” Amazingly they still manage to retain that same gritty sound that made them so unique, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d say this was recorded in their prime.
