Scream Out Loud
Scream Out Loud
(Luxor Records)
It’s been a bit of time since Scream Out Loud released their screamo debut (via Indianola) back in 2012, but that gap has served them well in several ways. One, it has given them a better chance of attracting fresh ears who never heard their first release (we’ll circle back to this). Two, it also allowed them to better figure out their strengths and develop a new sound. While Live It Up was very much based in that kind of screamo that had Indianola famous back in the day of Across Five Aprils, it was a very dated formula by 2012 when the band made their appearance. Not only that, their take on the sound was lackluster and in dire need of polish. Luckily, fast forward four years, and the band has returned with a sound that is, essentially, rock. With the exception of a couple screamed moments (very brief), their self-titled effort falls more along the lines of Boys Night Out and He Is Legend. “Go For It”, “Just Another Song”, “Don’t Tell Me How To Feel”, and “A Path That I Believe In” showcase the evolution best, as well as their range (“Don’t Tell Me…” and “A Path…” showing the alternating spectrum ends most memorably). And, for good measure, the band has included a good rendition of “Iris” to end the record.
Honestly, Scream Out Loud still have some work to do, but this sophomore release is light years ahead of Live It Up. The band is most definitely headed in the right direction. Though not outright memorable, this is a record that grows on the listener if given the chance. (Thomas Lehane)
