Album Review: The Decoy – ‘Parasites’ EP

The Decoy
Parasites EP
(Ghoulish Records)

Sometimes a band can skirt along well enough on a good idea alone. Other times, and those are the best times, is when said band takes a good idea and works it to great effect. Enter in UK-based alternative group The Decoy, whoseParasites EP is a fantastic collection of cooties-level catchy hooks, proggy riffs, and punk energy coalesce into a wonderful whole. The Decoy take the mathy rock of Biffy Clyro, the anthemic pop of The Police and early Fall Out Boy (yes, you read correctly), with some southern hardcore and prog sprinkles for good measure.

To my original point, the sound The Decoy have found in Parasites is a great idea, mixing the heavy and the heavily melodic in equal doses. However, what’s really impressive is how effectively the band have milked those good ideas into great songs with immense replay value. The title track is an expansive and propulsive track. “Vultures” is probably the best of the bunch, recalling Take This To Your Grave-era Fall Out Boy with a hook and a riff better than anything that band has written in a long time. Overall, The Decoy has announced itself in commanding fashion, a feast for fans of proggy, funky, hyper-melodic punk (to be specific), or just fans of good alt/rock in general. (Nicholas Senior)
