When I first read that The Hives were releasing a new album earlier this year, I had to actually do a double-take. The gap between Lex Hives (2012) and The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons (2023) was a window that I was expecting to be the norm for the group in terms of releasing music. Luckily, I was wrong! Their new album The Hives Forever Forever The Hives descends onto the masses August 29 via Play It Again Sam records. The Swedish garage-rock royalty still carry their flag high and strong, delivering their signature recipe of killer riffs and rockin’ anthems.
After the introduction, the album dives into “Enough Is Enough,” which gives fans the classic Hives sound—loud, catchy guitar riffs and words to shout to. The gritty, crooning vocals scratch that itch for a raw but not overly harsh listen. “Paint A Picture” has a fun bubbly feel to it, all while maintaining the intensity they’re known for. The time change in the chorus is a surprising delight that branches the listener off into another direction. This song gives my ears a buzz that feels just right.
“Born A Rebel” has quite the character to it. Starting off strong with twangy little riffs and a steady cowbell, it has classic themes of rebellion. The song is less rowdy but still loud as hell. The quiet keys give a nice touch to the background, adding depth to the tale of being born a rebel. “The Path of Most Resistance” shows a more composed side to The Hives. It’s tight and rigid but in the right ways. You can really feel the musicality of the guitars and drums playing each note and beat with laser focus intention.
It wouldn’t be a Hives album if The Hives didn’t talk about The Hives, and they do just that with the closing title track “The Hives Forever Forever The Hives.” The song wraps up the album nicely with a theme of reflection and joy about The Hives. The chorus being a catchy and crowd shouting anthem, sure to enhance their already legendary live experience.
The Hives still have it, and at this rate, they will forever have it. The garage rock masters are consistent and dependable for putting out great rock ‘n’ roll with attitude and charisma that makes them classic. The Hives Forever Forever The Hives.
