Album Review: We Were Wolves – “Ruin Your Weekend”

We Were Wolves
Ruin Your Weekend

Following up their 2013 full-length record, Wolf House, We Were Wolves has released the EP Ruin Your Weekend. The Houston, Texas-based hard rock quartet really prove their mettle with this four-song offering. The appeal of the EP is that it embodies a live, “one-take,” sound, devoid of fluff and overproduction. Most importantly, the songs are good.

The blistering opener, “Home,” is driven by Vinc Prihoda’s percussive method of playing guitar while in rhythm mode.

The resounding thunder of Zach Elizondo’s drumming and new member Chris Badger’s bass in “One Eye” are played with radical abandon. Frontman Drew Haught’s distortion-enhanced vocals complement the Wolves’ bruising rhythm section. Haught’s diction resembles QOTSA singer Josh Homme, particularly in the title track—a knockoff worthy of praise. (Charlie Steffens)
