Album Review: Winter Calling – ‘Faces’

Winter Calling
Faces
(Self-Release)

Winter Calling is a progressive metal band from Florida and they have released their sophomore album, Faces, which is their follow up to 2015’s As Darkness Falls. This new album features artwork from David Ho as well as a guest appearance from guitarist John Wesley of Fish and Porcupine Tree.

Although the progressive metal name is thrown around, the music also has hints of gothic metal and 90’s alternative, which means that it will be an album that people from those genres will be able to enjoy. The vocals are strong and melodic, but although mostly smooth, the slight growling adds to the intensity of the songs. The playing is tight, with powerful drumming, and slick guitar playing that goes from the chugging power riffs, to the subtle and sinewy solos that will grab a hold of you. The keys and strings throughout the album definitely add a lot of texture to the songs, and also happen to be performed by the band’s drummer Wayne Hoefle. Songs like “Follow Me Down” are so catchy, crunchy, smooth and thrilling at the same time, that you get drawn into the album. Vocalist Chris Hodges has the ability to use his voice to grab your ears and twist them, by the pure ability to change his style in the drop of a hat and sound flawless as well. The production makes everything stand out and keeps things clean, but not sterile.

If you are looking for a progressive rock album like Yes or Pink Floyd, keep moving, but if you are interested in a heavier and darker sound, buddy this is the album for you. Thick and full of songs that will have you hitting replay time and time again, this is an album that you won’t tire of listening to.
