When you think of French artist Laura Cox, you may remember her from her old Youtube days of covering bad-ass rock songs. Now, she’s evolved into a groundbreaking solo artist bringing back the nostalgic classic rock sound we’ve all been searching for again.

Cox has already released two other solo albums since 2017 and isn’t stopping any time soon. With her newest album release, Head Above Water, Cox has truly taken us back to the good ol’ days of old-school rock ‘n’ roll.

This album is filled with classic rock guitar riffs that simultaneously feel familiar and innovative. You can hear the deep classic rock roots in Cox’s voice as she sings passionately and plays with matching intensity.

Each song on this album has its own style and rhythm, but they still work so well together. Cox establishes such a mastery of flow between her tracks in this album that you won’t find yourself skipping through any of them.

Head Above Water is filled with 11 incredible songs, but a few stand out the most. The album begins with a groovy and strong start with the title track, kicking in with a punchy guitar riff that immediately hooks you into the rest of its songs.

The next two tracks, “One Big Mess” and “Set Me Free,” take on their own styles and stand out as windows-down-and-head-banging tunes.

About halfway through the album is “Old Soul,” a softer track with a hint of country tones that add a bit of brightness to this album. Cox lets her country inspiration shine through throughout this album, complimenting her complex guitar tones, especially in her other softer songs like “Before We Get Burned.”

The dreamy “Seaside” is a personal favorite of this album. Cox’s sobering voice is paired with a minimalistic but atmospheric guitar. The album ends with “Glassy Days,” another slow track with a steady rhythm. This song fades out with a slide, almost like a cliffhanger, that leaves us excited to see how Cox continues her story in her next release.

This album is a true revival of classic rock ‘n’ roll. If you’re looking for an album where each song has its own personality and is reminiscent of the classic rock you grew up with, then Head Above Water is for you.
