Approaching Troy
Best Intentions EP
(Self-Released)
If you’re anything like yours truly, your favorite time for music was when Brand New still did TV appearances and Adam Lazzara was smaller than your little sister. All of your favorite albums were released before Obama took office. Your favorite thing to do is host and attend Emo Night (and its various copies, such as Atlanta’s Pop Punk Party). You pine for the way music once was.
Enter Approaching Troy, the band that is bringing back the sound that we all love and come back to, even if our music tastes have changed or expanded. Their newest EP, Best Intentions, sounds like Hawthorne Heights meets TAYF era Taking Back Sunday. This is more than an emo revival. This is an emo throwback.
Best Intentions opens with “Prelude”, an instrument-heavy epic that could back a blockbuster movie. “Wake Up” is just as super-charged, going directly into the full throttle “Sparta (This Isn’t Over)”, which is sure to put the band on the map. “Star Crossed” sounds like an old TBS b-side, injecting a small bit of melody the album previously lacked. Wrapping up the EP is the acoustic reinvention of the band’s hit “Dear Sadie”, cracking open its electric shell and bringing out the feeling in the vocals that were previously masked by the soaring instrumentations of the band. Unplugging the song gives it another dimension, one that could appeal to a wider audience.
The road to hell might be paved with good intentions, but the road to a lasting career as a band is paved with Best Intentions.
