Album Review: Bulletproof Lovers – Shot Through the Heart

(Rum Bar Records)

Bulletproof Lovers are rockers! Shot Through the Heart is this Spanish band’s second full-length album, and this band lays down rock ‘n’ roll in its rawest form. Raw, nasty, heavy riffing guitars… badass nasty guitars, a rhythm section that makes you take stock that all of your teeth are still intact, and perfectly situated vocals. Y’know, those vocals that are sometimes edgy as hell and then surprisingly almost… tender? Frontman Kurt Baker manages to give each tune a unique vocal signature. These tunes are hot and sexy, mostly straight up rock with pop-infused melodies… and you certainly can’t go wrong with that.

I enjoyed this album from start to finish. Baker and guitarist/vocalist Luiyi Costa, guitarist/vocalist Juan Irazu, bassist Gonzalo Ibañez and drummer Joseba Arza give us a nice little foray into rock ‘n’ roll with the dirtier, garage-y rock ‘n’ roll tunes like “I Ain’t a Joke” and “Heart of Stone” to the poppier “Not Your Toy” and “I Am My Radio” to the anthemic “Drive It Outta Control” and “Can’t Let Go.”

There isn’t a bad tune in the bunch! My faves include “One Last Night” (Brit-pop), “On Overdrive” (grungy, garage rock ), and “All I Need” (think Green Day meets White Lion). Youngsters will probably have to look up that last band, but it’ll be a nice introduction.

This album kicks ass! Fans of rock and pop, ’80s hair bands and bands like Green Day and The Hellacopters should definitely check out this album. This is rock ‘n’ roll that mixes the old and new quite expertly.
